went to walmart the other day and picked up seeds for this year's herb garden:
these will be added to some french tarragon that i asked my dad to keep alive over the winter (his thumb is much greener than my own!). when it comes to tarragon, the best quality comes from french tarragon, which for some reason cannot be grown well from seed. the tarragon seed that you see in stores is russian tarragon, which is of inferior culinary quality. best to acquire a live plant, which will continue to thrive and renew itself. i like your taste in herbs...the only thing I mi9ght add to the list is lemon balm. From the mint family, you'll think you added mint and lemon zest...very nice, easy to grow plant.
And once you plant the chives, you're in like Flynn...they are a very hardy perennial that will keep coming back to haunt you.

well, i planted all the herbs above (plus lavender) this last weekend. we'll see how they do. i planted them in cheap plastic pots (the kind you get from a greenhouse etc.) that are just about the size and shape of a normal old-style tin coffee can. should work pretty well! eventually, i'd like to get them all into larger, nicer-looking planters and line the front walk with them, especially the perennials, but we'll see ~
dave - i'f i have luck with these ones, i will look into the lemon balm ~ i don't recall seeing it in seed around here, but will check again!
i'll be getting my tarragon from my dad early next week. his thumb is much greener than mine, so he kept it alive for me all winter and i'll grab a couple of shoots to plant into soil.

Tarragon can dramatically change your eating habits, given a little time and experimentation. The leaves of this herb have a taste that is something akin to anise, which makes it ideal for a variety of dishes. Try placing the leaves in soups and stews, then experiment with salads.

I'm on board with the tarragon as well...one of my personal favorites. I'll have to dig up my old tarragon grilled fish recipe, make it and post it I guess.

If you think anything like I do, you hear the word tarragon and immediately think vinegar. Tarragon is a great flavoring for vinegar. Up until now, you may have run to the store to buy your tarragon vinegar, but consider waking up one morning, picking some tarragon from your garden, placing it in vinegar, steeping it for two to three weeks, and then enjoying your own homemade tarragon vinegar!
