You know folks...this may sound like a strange way to open a thread about receiving a package from my good buddy, but I have to interject a bit of military history, and hopefully a wee bit of humor for you here.
In the United States Army, there is a long held and respected axiom that goes like this: There are two things that fall from the sky: #1 Birdshit #2 Fools Well, my pal Rivet and I are lucky enough (or foolish enough) to belong to the latter group mentioned above. He to the world famous All-Americans...the 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg North Carolina...and myself to the united states Army Special Forces (green berets) at the very same Fort Bragg. Why do I mention this? When I received a box from my pal today I immediately thought.."Jesus McTavish Schwartz Rivet! your not jumping out of a C-141 Starlifter with this stuff!" Somehow i think Rivet learned a hard lesson the same way I did...on his very first full equipment jump....I lost about half my pack, not sure about him. But after about a half an hour with a utility knife I did manage to get past the security measures so expertly applied by John, and I must thank him profusely for such a wonderful selection of goodies. Here's the lot, from left to right. Some down home chili mix that looks very interesting...not sure what way I'll use that yet, a nice jar of shrimp paste (you all know how much I like to cook Thai!) a jar of yardbird rub that smells out of this world, a nice bottle of Koop's yellow mustard, a great looking cherry jam, some Mount Olive Dills, and in the rear enough Asian pepper flakes to light up Chicago if the power ever goes out. ![]() Now I've been hearing about these mount Olive pickles for awhile from a few different members, and we just can't get them out east, so I'm really looking forward to them. ![]() I must admit to you all at this point that I am a virgin to any yellow mustard other than French's...so it's probably a good thing that John is also opening my eyes to something else new. I only have one thing to compare it with, but will do so at my earliest opportunity. ![]() And well...I'm guessing this is enough for a good sized batch of Kimchee...maybe enough to give everyone in South Korea a taste... ![]() Hey, thanks again John. I truly appreciate it, and will report back here on all my findings. |
