Most of us have herbs and spices in our kitchen because the use of herbs and spices has been incredibly important throughout the history. Everyday herbs and spices may do more than enhance the flavor of food. As all the spices originate from plants, it not only improves the taste of food but also preserves them for long period of time.

Modern science has shown that many of the spices carry remarkable health benefits. Common herbs and spices provide a protection against certain chronic conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease because they have anti-bacterial as well as anti-viral properties.

Here is a breakdown of the health benefits of various herbs and spices:
1. Cinnamon: - reduce inflammation and lower blood sugar and blood triglyceride levels
2. Basil: - used in digestive disorders
3. Arrowroot: - used in treatment for conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome
4. Turmeric: - reduce inflammation and improve joints

These are just a few herbs and spices. Likewise, there are a number of herbs and spices with a lot of health benefits. So always include them in your food.

Great thread idea, CindSein.

One thing to keep in mind is that separating herbs into culinary and medicinal catagories is, to a large extent, an artificial construct. Virtual all herbs have some medicinal properties.

For instance, mint, catnip (which is, after all, a mint) and fennel all have stomach-settling properties. All the oreganos are good for headaches (as is rosemary). Alfalfa is a specific for treating arthritis. And so on.

Would be nice if we use this thread to create a running list of such multi-purpose herbs.

BTW, welcome to our little corner of the culinary world. I hope you like it here, and that we here more from you.
But we hae meat and we can eat
And sae the Lord be thanket
