![]() ![]() ![]() Photo Courtesy: 123 Rf. Nobody seems to understand or know why the Dominican Republic has a hamburger with the name Chimichurri, an Argentinian named salsa. The Dominican Chimi and Chimichurri are totally 100% different items. None the less, both scrumptuous. PRONOUNCED: THI MI ( the Ch is a very soft THI as in thought ); not chimi; and the same THI MI CHUR RI pronounciation for THI MI CHUR RI. DOMINICAN CHIMI LATIN HAMBURGER ... Here is the recipe ... 1 1/4 pound ground beef 1 medium onion minced 1/2 of a large red bell pepper diced 2 garlic cloves minced 1/3 cup cilantro chopped finely 1 tsp. oregano 1 tblsp. Worcestershire 4 hamburger buns 2 cups finely sliced cabbage 1 carrot grated 1 small magenta red violet onion sliced in rings ( cebolla morada ) 1 red tomato sliced 1/4 inch 2 tblps. Ketchup 2 tblsps. Ali Oli or Mayonnaise or Mayonnaise Light 1 tblsp. yellow Mustard 1) combine the ground beef, yellow onion, garlic, cilantro, oregano, Worcestshire, and a pinch of salt with a turn or two of freshly ground black peppercorns 2) combine with the ground beef and form into 4 hamburgers 3) On a Griddle: heat a 12" skillet over medium heat until hot and lightly toast the hamburger buns and then oil lightly the Grill and prepare the burgers, turning once to your likeness and it takes about 6 to 7 minutes for rare and transfer to buns when done to your likeness 4) combine the cabbage, carrot, salt, & divide amongst the burgers 5) sear the tomato slices and the red onion arcs and place on the burgers 6) Blend / electrically Mix together the mayo, mustard and the Ketchup and top the burger and / or the bun with the salsa. SERVE WITH PICKLES AND A COLD BEER ... ENJOY. Margi.

I lived in the Dominican Republic in the 70's and 80's when the Chimichurri burger got its start.
Two Argentinian guys started charcoal grilling "American" style burgers in the front yard of their apartment building on the Maleccon (Avda G Washington). This was unique to the DR at the time since the only othe buger that was being sold was at Papaterra's store downtown. To American tastes, it was not very good. To distinguish the real burger from the Dominican patty, the Argentinians called it chimichurri (a catchy monicure). Upper class Dominicans loved the Am burger since they had thought that the patty they were used to tasted the way it did because of the meat quality. Little did they know that if mostly left alone, their gound beef tasted like Ameican burgers. The Argentinians eventually disappeared but the name stuck. The buger again changed to appeal to the tastes of the general population.
