Serves 4

1 syn on Extra Easy (Add extra syns if not using pitta bread as healthy extra)

This dish is usually/traditionally made using lamb, but the mince is quite fatty, so we tried it with beef and were very pleasantly surprised.

1lb Extra Lean Minced Beef (finely ground is a must) or Lamb
1 large beaten egg
1 small slice of wholemeal bread (toasted and crumbed)
Garlic to taste (we use two good heaped tablespoons crushed!)
1 teaspoon dried mint
Salt and pepper to taste

Place all ingredients into a large bowl and mix thoroughly with the hands. Shape the mixture into a large thick circular patty about ¾ inch thick (2cm). Slide the mixture into a large frying pan and cook over a low heat until the top appears to change colour slightly. Flip the patty over to cook thoroughly on the other side. (I use two pans, or a large plate to help flip) It’s a good opportunity at this point to remove all excess liquid from the pan (especially if using lamb).

When the meat is thoroughly cooked through, remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly before carving thinly with a very sharp large bladed knife.

Use a healthy “B” wholemeal pitta bread to serve with a large mixed green salad. (Or slimming world chips).

We use either Fat Free chilli sauce or you can mix more crushed garlic with fromage frais and black peppers for a syn free garlic sauce.

Alternatively, a tomato based sauce is very simple,

Four tablespoons of passata
Teaspoon of dried mint
Half a teaspoon of paprika
1 Teaspoon of crushed garlic
Blend all together in a small bowl and refrigerate as long as possible before serving. (Best made the night before to infuse all of the flavours together)

Sounds delicious...a great deal like Gyros...if it were cooked on a vertical spit I guess it would be a variation on gyros.
Go ahead...play with your food!
