State/Country Culinary Project for you and the kids
This is an idea I had some time ago, that I tried with my kids. My first try wasn't successful, I believe the kids were way too young. But thanks to some discourse with HistoricFoodie, it reminded me about the idea. Since then, Brook and Margi have been giving me some great suggestions to incorporate into the project. (Tas, can you please split some of the discussion into this thread) My idea is to pick one U.S. State to highlight each month. I will then put together a sort of informational day that the whole family can focus on food, fun and facts that are representative of that state...or of that states history. Please note that Countries can be substituted into this project as well. In fact, my initial thoughts were to alternate every two weeks between a highlighted U.S. State and World Country. I think this would be too much work, especially while this idea is just taking form. I'm going to stick to only U.S. States for now, then re-visit the idea of adding World Countries later. The idea is to come up with an entree and dessert that is representative of that States land, or of its history. We would make placemats that included interesting facts about the highlighted State and some projects that the kids can participate in. Some things that may be included on the placemat are...
Some other ideas I'm thinking of adding...
These are just some ideas...and I'm hoping to use this as an idea thread. My hopes, if we have others that would participate, is to have a loose structure that we can use to start our own projects (in a new Project Thread)...then as the project day comes we can post some pictures of the State/Country's food, placemats, our children participating in the project. Then, should we do another one next month...highlight and share that project as well under the same thread. Please share and let me know what you think...and any ideas we can add. Thanks! Dan |

Dan. Firstly, I am quite enthusiastic with the project. I have 5 grandchildren; 3 in Zurich, Switzerland and 2 in St. Augustine, Florida however they are relocating to Portland, Oregon area in early 2013. I have not yet spoken to Naia if Adyson who shall be 5 December 19th would like to participate. I think this is spectacular and educational too. Many facets and diverse. TU for posting. Margi

Dan, keep in mind too things: First, you don't want to make the placemats too busy. So their size can be a limiting factor as to how much data goes on them. Second, you don't want to overload the kids. If you do, it will seem like school work, rather than fun. The whole point of this, IMO, is that they don't realize they're learning stuff. They're just having a good time.
That's the idea behind all creative play.

Dan, I wanted to add the twins , just turned six and are tri.lingual, and Nathalia believes it is a super idea also creating team work and creativity. Fun a key word. Brook is correct that this is not school ... Of course they are learning however it is more profound. More of an extra curriculum project to do artistic crafted placemats. MC.

Dan. I would enjoy making placemets over Christmas in Zurich. Have collage idea in mind with photos and drawings, water colors, Crayons & whatever the Twins Brainstorm !! Kids have alot of spontaneous creativity given paste, water colors, construction colored paper & photos with colored pens and crayons, sparkles and tourist magazines and stencils, fl at tiny buttons and some old Christmas Cards and textiles ...

Thanks Hoser! I certainly appreciate the help you can offer in the New England region. My wife and I went on a driving trip up to Maine before we had our first child, it was a wonderful experience. Beautiful land, people and food.

Michigan: Da Yooper Pasties, posted here somewhere and a good cherry pie which I'm sure you could find many recipes for. The pasties for the upper peninsula and the cherry pie representing the very important sour cherry industry in the lower peninsula. Wash it down with some Vernors ginger ale and some squirt soda. Don't forget to call it pop.

Dan, My daughter Nathalia brought up a very good question; should the placemats be made on Oak Tag hard firm colored board paper, plastic, or construction paper ?
Considering size, perhaps the construction paper would be pefect size 8 inches x 11 inches or oak tag colored board paper cut to these dimensions.
Please do advise.
Thanks, Margi.

Card stock can be bought in multiple colors and thicknesses. I've had experience laminating it, it works just fine if you choose to go that way.
Some retailers will let you have a few pages of card stock before purchasing. It's best to test it--both the lamination and running it through a printer, as some glossy finishes may interfere with printing. Here's a multi-colored sample pack available on Amazon, as an example: http://www.amazon.com/Wausau-Collection-Specialty-Cardstock-46407/dp/B003A2I4V2/ref=sr_1_2?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1355684854&sr=1-2 Card stock will give you a more sturdy place mat, but depending on the thickness of the lamination materials, construction paper will be fine with a thicker lamination. Lamination comes in different thicknesses. Thought I'd share on this project--it looks like lots of fun and creativity for all. ~Feather |
