THE NEW SPAM CHALLENGE
We have come to another SPAM Challenge. The idea is to come up with the tastiest SPAM recipe that uses the fewest (TOTAL) ingredients. An example of TOTAL ingredients would be if you make Spam with Pasta. Using the pasta as the example, you have to count all the ingredients that it took to make the pasta. Flour, eggs, etc...if you use two different flours in the recipe then you need to count them. But you also need to count any ingredients that you used to prepare the pasta as well. An example would be using boiling water (and possibly salt) to cook your pasta. That's up to two additional ingredients necessary to make pasta for this dish. (No, we are not going to get into heat for the water or sun to grow the wheat, etc) In my example, used in Ron's initial 5 item SPAM Challenge, I made spam fried rice. I initially had a total of seven ingredients in my recipe. Brook, correctly, pointed out that I had used at least eight and probably more. Just to start with...I forgot to count the SPAM. So the count is already at eight. But I also failed to count the water or salt used to prepare the rice...so the count is now at 10 ingredients. If you use an ingredient in two or more parts of your recipe, they should be counted as such. An example would be if you were to put some sesame oil in a saute pan to cook your diced spam, then you add sesame oil in water to cook your rice, and pour some sesame oil when combining ALL your ingredients at the end to top/complete the dish...then you should count the sesame oil as being used as three separate ingredients. ALL ingredients on your store bought item should be counted as such. An example would be using tomato sauce in your recipe. The most simple tomato sauce recipe would be to reduce down some whole tomatoes in a pan with no oil, no seasoning...this is counted as one ingredient. BUT, if you buy Ragu Traditional Sauce you will need to count ALL the ingredients on that label. So if you use a prepared item, be prepared to include what brand and the number of ingredients on the label. In my example, of the SPAM fried rice, my ingredient count was questioned (rightly so!). I then needed to amend my ingredient count to include the forgotten/overlooked item. This was not a big deal and I needed to change my initial count to include my forgotten item (THE SPAM) (okay...how did I forget the main ingredient!!!). Some other questions were raised if I used Soy Sauce in my recipe, which I never do for this type of fried rice...so I didn't need to change my count. The ingredient count in your recipe WILL BE SCRUTINIZED, so please do not take offense. If someone brings up a challenge to your ingredient count you can concede right away and make the necessary changes to the count number (as in me forgetting the SPAM. If someone brings up a challenge to you and you feel they are in error...let them know why you believe they are in error and an agreement will be made between the parties involved (an example would be the questioned soy sauce in my SPAM fried rice recipe. Did you use Soy Sauce? No) ANY person can scrutinize your ingredient count, provided that they have a participating recipe in this contest. So, if you want to challenge another persons recipe and you don't yet have a recipe in the contest, you must submit one before you raise the ingredient challenge. EACH recipe needs to be directly challenged individually. Our goal is to make the best dish possible with the fewest ingredients. You will have one month, after the START NOW post, in order to submit your recipe. After the recipe entries are closed the contest will continue open for two additional weeks, to allow for any challenges. If there is a tie for lowest number of ingredients, there will be a cook-off between these contestants.. A panel of judges, to be named later, will cook each of the finalist recipes and send their best tasting dish for submission. The recipe contestant who has the most votes will determine the tie breaker. Please note that Open can of SPAM and serve (or any variation) will not be accepted. Two entries are accepted per person. THERE WILL BE A GLORIOUS PRIZE FOR THE VICTOR! (the winner will receive the prize in the mail and can then reveal themselves to the rest of us) I'll leave the discussion open for a period of time, add any questions then. After I post the START NOW post the time will start ticking and you may submit your recipes at that time. Okay, so what recipe do you hope to submit. I'm relying on you guys and gals a little here, to submit honest true recipes that you feel compose a dish...or something that you were truly trying to interpret in your SPAM recipe. ![]() |

Well, gee, Dan. When using commercial products, do we include all the preservatives in the count? Or just the recognizable food items?

well, since we're going to do this, the first thing i'd like to propose is that we slash through one bit of red tape and possibly help with the math:
since spam is indeed the one common component that we all will be using, i suggest we simply count it as one - it's the common denominator, so the number of ingredients in the can is a wash across the board. in other words, the ingredient count for any entry should be assumed to be (the number of ingredients) + 1 (spam) = total beyond that, i'm ready to rumble - and i have a plan.....

Appreciate the offer, Ron. But our customs inspectors would confiscate it at the Ohio River. Probably ship it to Hawaii or something. Besides which, didn't Darko just win? I mean, how to you top one ingredient? |

because if you read dan's opening post, you will see that he had to leave before he finished it, so the rules aren't yet fully laid out; as i recall, when dan was brainstorming the idea, he mentioend that simply serving spam doesn't quite (pardon me but i must say it) cut the mustard.
based on this, i imagine that we'll be seeing some parameters on what is considered a valid dish for entry....

I'll stand by my original dish, although I will very slightly modify the "recipe" that I utilised:
![]() Spam Hash To serve 4: 1 can of Spam 1 large onion 4 potatoes Black pepper, to taste 4 eggs Dice Spam, potatoes and onion in a fine and uniform manner; try for a 1/4-inch dice. Heat the Spam and onions in a heavy, appropriately-sized pan over low to medium heat, until the onions just begin to caramelise. Add diced potatoes and cook over medium to medium-high heat, turning and "hashing" occasionally, until the Spam and potatoes are cooked throughout and begin to crisp up. Add pepper to taste, then spread the hash out evenly in the pan. Make 4 depressions in the hash and break your eggs into them, adding just a bit of pepper for seasoning. Leave the pan to sit on medium-low heat until the eggs cook to desired doneness; cover the pan if desired in order to cook the eggs. Divide into 4 equal portions and serve. ![]() Ingredients: Spam Onion Potatoes Pepper Eggs This is.....well, this is 5 ingredients...... Such is my entry ~ I do hereby attest that this is, in my opinion, a complete and plausible dish; indeed, the addition of the egg might even be seen as superfluous or "above and beyond....." Nevertheless, there it is.....

okay...so 10 ingredients to make my SPAM FRIED RICE (hibachi style). Please let me know if you suspect that I forgot any ingredients or if you would question my count. [/QUOTE]Well, not to stir the pot Dan, but I can clearly see green peas in the dish, and don't see them on the list.

Um... but wait.... if you're supposed to list the ingredients, shouldn't the spam itself as 7 ingredients?
Pork with Ham, Salt, Water, Modified Potato Starch, Sugar, Sodium Nitrite. |

Here's my little contribution to the Spam cause, which turned out to be a failure of epic proportions.
I had seen in the past, a lovely "blossom" made of a bologna chub and some butt rub, and thought I would try to duplicate that with some Spam. Mistake number 1...since this requires some rather precise slicing of a crosshatch pattern most of the way through the spam....this should be accomplished before consuming mass quantities of barley and hops containing beverages. ![]() So I hacked up some spam and coated it with Hoser's butt rub Then into the smoker...that's spam and butt rub so far for ingredients....if we get picky (and I'm going to) it's 8 ingredients just in the rub. Spam paprika black pepper kosher salt turbinado sugar chili powder granulated garlic onion powder cayenne pepper Here's what it looked like after a couple of hours over very low heat and smoke. As you can see...the blossom effect was a total failure....It opened up to more closely resemble a fish skeleton than a flower blossom LOL the spam does not have enough consistency to open like flower petals, and I sliced far too deeply. If someone actually wants to try this (I can't imagine why) they should not slice more than 2/3 of the way through the block of Spam. That being said, as you can see I served it up with a bit of honey-mustard hoping I could kill the taste of the Spam with a combination of that and the butt rub. My conclusions: It's Spam It sucked Spam sucks and always will suck |
