Surely these must be French and enjoyed by millions since the beginning of time.

Nope.

Lorraine Lorusso was the creator of chocolate covered strawberries during the 1960's. She introduced them at a store named "Stop n Shop" located in Chicago, Illinois.

Today we put together some of these treats for Mother's Day.  Some were lined with white chocolate and some were coated with crushed hazelnuts.  All were delicious and quite a bit less expensive than commercially prepared chocolate covered strawberries which can run up to $10.00 per berry Confused

Thanks Melissa!

There is a tale behind these berries that is worth telling.

My daughter is a traveler.  Yes, a dyed in the wool traveler.  Hobo if you will.  Among other means of transport, she rides the rails as she has connections with that culture.  She is quick to let you know she is not a bum.  Hobos are not bums.  They work when they reach their destinations.  They work to finance their passage to the next destination.  Her last two jobs were as a bartender on Bourbon St in NOLA for Mardi Gras which got her to Austin where she was line cook which brought her home.

She comes home to hang when she needs a break, and she is here right now working to finance her next trip to Alaska where she has a job waiting for her on a salmon boat.

She just finished working a week of 12hr shifts at a commercial facility that produces chocolate covered strawberries for holidays like Mother's day.  So she knew the routine.

We didn't have all of the proper equipment, but we had enough, and I think the berries turned out well.

Mom was happy, and when mom is happy everybody is happy Big smile

  Graco...first off...the strawberries look great!

Second, your daughter sounds truly amazing!  I couldn't imagine the life experiences she has gained in her years.  That being said, as a parent...I think I'd go nuts worrying (and I'm not one to worry much).  I wonder if she has ever had the time, or inclination, to jot down some likes/dislikes from town to town...some places of interest or special places to eat at various locations.  From a culinary, and visitor point of view...this would be a fantastic read ~ From the Mind of a Traveler ~

by the way...why wouldn't you want to eat commercially made covered strawberries?  hey...you don't write it if you don't really want to tell us LOL

Yes, I am concerned.  Of course I am. But I'm also proud.  She's got bigger cajones than I ever did and so the flip side is, Why didn't I take that route?

She has cooking experience and has related to me what she regards as her finest meals.  Most of which are from hole-in-the-wall places that respectable folks would never venture into.

The berries are covered with a slick film and are not washed.  They are coated without regard to the quality.  Some are green, some are black.  Even mold.  It doesn't matter.  Its all covered up by the chocolate.

At the end of each day, there is a boatload of rejected berries as they do not "look" perfect so the employees are invited to take those home.  Most employees choose to leave them where they are.

You have every reason to be proud...I think it's awesome!  No, I don't have the cajones to do it either.

If you can ever remember some of the hole in the wall places...I'd love to hear about them!  When we go on vacations we always try to find some places that can give us a good picture of the food, people, culture of the area.  Last thing I want to do on a vacation is go eat at a Planet Hollywood...it tells me nothing about the land I'm visiting.  An exception would be if it's simply to visit with a person...then the person takes the forefront to the land, etc.

   Thanks again!
