not sure where this little rant should go, I suppose the kitchen table is as good as any, though feel free to move it.

I picked up a jar of nutella this morning for the first time in a very very long time. Bah. what a waste of money. I used to love the stuff. With it's taste of roasted hazelnuts with a hint of chocolate. This crap is pure sugar. All I taste is sugar and chocolate. Not a hint of nut flavor of any kind. Guess it's been updated for "American" tastes. I should have known when the first two ingredients were sugar and oil.  I hate that companies do stuff like that. European nutella is awesome and so many people like it, why change it for America? Same with cadbury chocolate.

Anyway, guess I'll have to swing by the import foods and see if they have any real nutella.

Rant over, thanks for listening. Ouch

Thanks Dan, sounds like the author has exactly the same experience as me. However I've been doing some digging online and they can't really be that much different. Looking at the ingredient list and nutrition values for the european version, it matches up perfectly with the jar I have here, right down to the grams of sugar per serving. So maybe I'm just imagining a perceived difference from my childhood memories. Or maybe the european version has been changed too.

I haven't had both side by side...and it's really too sweet for my liking anyway.  The Homemade hazelnut/chocolate spread mentioned at the end of the article sounds good.

cheers

That's what gets me too. I don't remember it being sweet, more like peanut butter only hazelnuts instead, with just a hint of chocolate. This stuff is like eating melted chocolate, or maybe fudge before it's completely setup. Maybe my tastebuds have matured as I was probably a teenager last time I had it.

It's a common, but unfortunate, scenario. Something become popular, often on a "insy" basis, and the manufacturer (often new owners) decide to capitalize, and replace quality for mass production.

Anybody else remember Boodles gin? Arguably the best ever distilled. Until they got greedy. Then there's.....well, y'all get the idea.
But we hae meat and we can eat

Well, I've just tried mine & I taste hazelnuts and chocolate, and it's not overly sweet.

I wonder if Ferrero makes a different blend for the US?

According to the ingredients list, no. However I'm almost certain what we get here in the states is modified to the "American" taste whatever that is.
