Hoser and I had a bit of discussion on another thread regarding a couple of TV cooks that we are not real fond of. That set me to wondering who the rest of you enjoy watching and don't so much enjoy.
For me, I really like Gordon Ramsay, Giada de Laurentis, Graham Kerr, Julia Child, Anthony Bourdain, Bobby Flay, Sara Moulton, and Alton Brown (he lives here in Marietta and you'll see him out and about), and I'm probably forgetting a few others. Some I'm not so fond of are Rachael Ray, that bizarre foods guy Andrew Zimmern (it seems no matter what garbage he puts in his mouth he raves about how good it is, yeah right), The Neeleys, and the worst of all, Paula Deen, that ridiculous, phony, put-on Southern accent she affects is worse than nails on a chalkboard. |

Giada...
I wasn't going to say it Ron, because I have a lot of respect for her culinary education (Le Cordon Bleu in Paris), her presentation, technique, and creativity, as well as the fact that the notoriously curmudgeonly Anthony Bourdain considers her to be a formidable culinary talent but...... YES!!!!! Giada Giada Giada Giada Giada Giada Giada Giada Giada Giada Giada Giada Giada Giada!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously though, she seems to be a genuinely nice and humble person who is completely deserving of every bit of the success she is enjoying. |

i know. my wife gets livid every time she comes home from work and sees all of the episodes of everyday italian i've been recording. i try to say that the recipes look really good, but.....
along with the other traits you mention, i really, really like her enthusiasm and her dedication to the family aspect of italian cooking, and it shows in her programs. i ahve all of her books and in each one you can really see her dedication and enthusiasm, and that's a rare thing these days, even among people who are professionals and good at what they do.
i like alton brown, too ~ if you ever get the chance, tell him he has a fan up in montana who really likes his approach, but - he's no giada!

Burger's Market is only a block down the street from my shop and Alton is a regular there. Really nice and humble local guy who made it big and always has time for a chat with fans. I'll give him your regards next time I run into him, I'm sure he doesn't remember me from the last time I ran into him LOL! but he is always gracious and I'll give him your regards nonetheless.

Giada is great...she'd be great even if she was flat chested. I also like Alton for the technical aspects he brings into everything... Ramsey is good....but there is absolutely no reason for him to be such an a-hole most of the time....does anybody remember Justin Wilson? He was one of my favorites for the little anecdotes he used to tell while he was cooking.

Yes Hoser I remember Justin Wilson. He was so funny telling all those cajun stories as he cooked some friggen awesome cajun foods. Even baught a few of his stand up comidies tapes back in the day.

Justin Wilson was great for his down to earth recipes and anecdotes. Also enjoy that lady Lydia on the show "Lydia Cooks Italian" or something like that. Occasionally she has her grandmother on and she's fun to watch as well~ definitely has a hearty appetite! Daizy Martinez always seems to come up with some great variations of food I am familiar with, plus she hits the grocers and we see her interact with local places. Far above and beyond, my favourite and one whom I grew up with was Julia Child. Love her cooking, her spiel and her way of simplyfying cooking, instead of making it complicated. Later on I've seen shows when she paired up with Jacques Pepin and it was wonderful to see two "strong willed" cooks share counterspace and exchange barbs with eachother...all in good fun. They made some good TV, and I even have a cookbook from the pair- Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home .

I can not believe so many like Giada de Laurentis!
She seems so Fake to me, from her Smile to her pronunciation of all the words....she just has to spit them words out to sound so true blue Italian...Bear those Teeth, make it look like your Growling instead of SMILING and her faceial features...whats up with that, YUKE!
I worked for True Blue Italians, sometimes I wondered if I was working for the Mafia or not from some things they did...But even know they were True Blue Italians, the only word they pronounced like True Blue Italians was Maniccoti...the always dropped the I and it was Cot.
Bobby Flay gets to me just like Giada de Laurentis! If I'm watching the Food Network and 1 of them come on, channel gets flipped...I used to what those throw down shows of his.....I watched it for 1 reason, to see him get his Arse handed to him!
The ones I like to sit and watch and when I'm looking for a Recipe to try out, I always go to the Food Network and look up their recipes are... Alton Brown, Rachail Ray, Tyler Florence, Guy Fieri (there is 1 thing I can not stand about him..his Fist Bumps, what the hell ever happened to High Fives??!!) Michael Symon(also like him but he needs to either Grow a Beard or a REAL Gotee or Shave that stupid lump of hair from under his chin) Robert Irvine(yeah I know, he was supposed to have faked his Resume but the guy is good at those impossiable time dealing dinners)
The ones I really feel are Doofs are....Bobby Flay, Giada de Laurentis, Duff Goldman, Aarón Sanchez and Pat and Gina Neely (Cook already and stop all the making out on camera, Cook Already, you don't have to be tongueing each other after every little half teaspoon of ingredient put in the bowl, Cook already and make some food, if you want to be doing that making out on Camera, I'm sure some Porn Company will give you a contract and you can get it on in front of the camera and slather each other up with some recipe and "Bake" it between each other!)
Years ago, Dad and Mom and I used to Vacation at Chincoteague Island, Virginia, we stayed at a camp ground called Inlet View Camp Ground.... 1 year we were down there and at the camp site beside us there was a family with 2 girls, they were from the Adirondacks of upstate New York...they were there for a week and we were there for a week...they started following me around and I didn't mind it at all, had a few late night swims with them in the bay minus swim wear when we would sneak off when our parents went to sleep.....the first time I saw Rachial Ray on TV and to this day, I swear she is that same Girl who was at the Camp Site...I Feel out of all the women on the Food Network, she is the Real 1!! She was brought up to cook with here and there stuff instead of measuring everything out and when she Smiles it looks like a True Smile, Heart Warming and Friendly..... Not some smile that looks like she is trying her best to bear Every Tooth in her mouth that God Gave her and look not like a smile but a women have crazed and ready to rip your throat out like another 1 does all the time!

LOLOLOL! SAME here. I DO like watching that show. I like Rick Bayless a lot. I also like Rocco DiSpirito. I like his cookbook " Now Eat This! 150 of America's Favorite Comfort Foods All Under 350 Calories. I like Martha Stewart's recipes, but it sometimes it annoys me how she always has to come up with fancy names for things such as pie dough, etc! It's PIE DOUGH MARTHA! I really like Guy Fieri a lot, He is from my home town area. His recipes DO seem to always have quite a few ingredients in them though. They still make me salivate! I like Alton and I like Tyler. I reach for Tyler's recipes often. A few of his holiday recipes have become tradition (especially his Thanksgiving recipes). |

you mention some good folks there, debbie - i am a real fan of rick bayless and tyler florence. guy is good too, and another one who shows real enthusiasm every time he is making something. i haven't heard of rocco but judging by the title of his book, i should check him out and learn a few things. martha? i agree - good stuff but too fancy!
i notice you didn't mention a certain italian gal.....

I honestly do not watch her much, and do not have a strong opinion either way. I have watched her and thought to myself "THAT is THE most perfect set of teeth and THE most perfect smile I've ever seen"!

lol - that's the part of her that my kids make fun of - they are strangely quiet about her other "attributes," however....
last year we tried her recipe for manicotti - i got pix of it but never got around to posting it. i will try to get them posted this week, if i am able to get my other important post done first!

I loved watching Mad coyote joe in Arizona...I know him and built houses right next to his house in Cave Creak. This one video is filmed in his backyard . actually his cooking show was filmed there as well .kinda neat. His book got me in to smoking foods and cooking.

Jacques Pepin and Mario Batalli. Both are superb technicians in the kitchen. Both have superior knowledge of ingredients and are masters of economy.
I believe Jacques could make a gourmet French meal from whatever he was given, and it would still be simple, good food, and something you could make at home. I believe Mario to have a consummate knowledge of the interactions of ingredients; being able to layer flavors and textures to wonderful effect. If I knew half of what either one of these guys know about food and kitchens I would be a happy guy! |
