I thought I would reach out in case anyone has some of these recipes in their possession. Just found out yesterday that my Father's family came to Edenwold Saskatchewan in 1891 from a town in Bukovina. Mothers family from Dembzin West Prussia in 1887 homesteaded and founded Brunkild Manitoba. I always thought I was of German descent. Knock me over with a feather.

Murray - I am wondering if your father's side of the family is of the group called "Germans from Russia," as mine is.
Our family originated in the Rhine Valley where Germany and France meet, yet we emigrated to the USA from the Beresan River region of Ukraine. Many, many Germans from Russia also went to Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, as well as South America. |

There are numerous Romanians in Brasov, 176 Km. from the Capital Bucharest, and going north on the Transylvania Pass whom are of German descent and speak German .. The architecture of Brasov is German, Swiss and Austrian .. It dates back to the mid 1800s and has all been restored and renovated .. It is a truly amazingly beautiful city. Located on the Translyvania Route is PELLE CASTLE which was the home of a royal family during this period .. The Castle Museum houses uncountable rooms of furniture of this period, paintings, and tons of artifacts .. The royal residents were of German Swiss or German Austrian heritage .. I have to look at the book I received as a gift .. on the history of the región & the castles -- who resided in them .. So this is quite possible .. There is another Castle which was built in 1377 on the high mountain pass, The Braun which during the 1840s or 1850s housed a royal family of German roots as well .. |

Since I spent 5 weeks in Romania ( 3 weeks in Brasov & Transylvania ) and 2 weeks in Bucharest, let me tell you about the modern map .. 1) HUNGARY is west of Romania. ( sort of to the central north of Romania ) .. 2) To my knowledge with out looking at a map, THE UKRAINE is east of Romania .. 3) Also to the west of Romania, is Serbia .. ( west ) .. So, the two do not meet, Percebes .. Have a lovely day. |

Hi, Murray -
I'm not sure if this will have anything relevant, but if you can get a good translation there might be something here: http://www.bessarabien.blog/rumanien |

Had a look at that. Recipes my Transylvanian-Saxon grandmother made were the Halushken (Cabbage rolls made with sauerkraut leaves - Heaven! I still make them) and Malai (Johnny Cake). Red cabbage (wonderful with Schnitzel), Goulash.
One I don’t see in the list was poppy-seed roll. But my absolute favourite was Lettuce Soup: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1bWJS23dCJM I really should make it again. She also used goose fat - as a cold remedy. She’d rub it on our chest and the bottoms of our feet to draw the cold out. |

My youngest son works in Northern England planting trees in the winter-Summer finds him planting trees in British Columbia reclaiming old coal mine sites.
I turn 60 this fall and he just surprised my wife and I with a offer of a trip to Northern Romania and Hungary to trace family roots this fall. I was caught off guard by his generous offer. He wants to explore with us.
