I believe I’ve mentioned that, in anticipation of our fishing trip to OBX, we had purchased one of those plug-in portable freezers. This was the Whynter FM-65G. 65 quart capacity, which is, perhaps, a little large just for transporting fish & game. But our thoughts were that it would make a good auxiliary freezer as well. We’d transfer a week’s supply of food from the chest freezers, and, thus, wouldn’t have to open them all that frequently.

All I can say is, if you’re contemplating purchasing one of these, or its smaller 45 quart version, don’t do it! The thing is useless as a portable freezer. There just isn’t enough power coming from the vehicle’s battery to run the compressor.

When we left, for instance, the internal temperature (after running on AC power) was -3F. When we arrived at our first night’s destination, seven hours later, it was 36F. I know this because the digital read-out integral to the unit was lit and recording. So there’s no question power was getting to the freezer. Just not enough.

That will never do.

I reviewed this at Amazon, and you can find all the gory details at: https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-FM-65G-65-Quart-Portable-Refrigerator/dp/B002W8DM5I/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1507982870&sr=8-10&keywords=portable+freezers

Scroll down to the review titled “An Expensive Joke.”

If anyone has experience with other makes & models of portable freezers I’d like to hear about your experiences.

It looks as if it "might" make a fair refrigerator, but not a freezer.

Many thanks for the review, Brook - I was considering one of these after you first told me about it earlier this year, but will have to re-evaluate now.

Is it possible that you got a "lemon?" It might be worth contacting someone about a replacement.

Yeah, it's possible. But looking at some of the negative reviews, it seems that problems are rather common, but customer service all but non-existent.

It's still a good freezer, so long as it's on A/C. It's been chugging along that way since we got home. It's just no good as a portable---which, of course, was the whole point.

Also, I am guessing that - for the price - you could get a much bigger and/or better freezer for the home and/or A/C.
