As most of you know, I went through a unnecessarily-agonizing process in choosing an enameled cast-iron Dutch oven, which is chonicled here:

Since a top-shelf option such as Le Creuset was absolutely out of my reach, I eventually went my initial instinct and purchased a 6.5-quart Tramontina through WalMart.com, and have had a few opportunities now to use it for a variety of dishes.

So far, I've used it for two beef roasts, a pork roast, twice for pernil, once for Bogrács Gulyás, once for Carbonade Flamande and twice for French Onion Soup. So far, I am completely, 100% satisfied with this Dutch oven and its ability to look good and perform very well. I've never had to turn the stovetop above medium, nor have I had to turn the oven temperature above 325, and I have gotten perfect food every time so far with it.

Well, a bit of a disclaimer: the food may not have been PERFECT, but that would have been the cook's fault, not the cookware's fault! Wink

Call me a very happy customer - considering the modest price paid for this Dutch oven, I've already gotten my money's worth, and expect to use it for many years to come!StarStarStarStar

For anyone interested in trying this Dutch oven and seeing for themselves how good it is, I just took a quick peek at WalMart.com, and I see that it is currently 39.99, which is 10$ less than what I paid for it. Definitely a good price and worth a try, in my mind - you really have nothing to lose.

One note of caution: when it arrives, or if it is on the shelf at the store, inspect it carefully inside and out for "popped bubbles" in the porcelain (inside) and enameled (outside) finish. as long as they do not leave dark "holes," and are not deep, they are not a problem on the outside, but any imprefection on the inside is definitely cause for concern. If you ordered it, have them return and exchange it and get one without imperfections - if it is in-store, choose another one or ask them to order one. You will get free shipping, either way, as long as you have them ship it to the store.
