I have lousy luck with root crops. Can't even grow radishes worth a darn. But a couple of days ago I harvested a handful of carrots, and today...
Back in the spring, I found some spongy, sprouting potatoes in the back of my fridge. Figuring I was just going to throw them out anyway, I planted them in my 2 biggest pots. These are large flowerpots, not 5-gallon cans or anything like that, so I figured I wouldn't grow any potatoes, but they grew beautiful foliage with purple flowers, so I was happy. Now the plants have died down, so I figured "What the heck?" and dug them up. I just harvested 9 potatoes, and some are of a decent size! |

There's something about roots, Melissa.
For me, if I treat them well, water and fertilize as needed, keep them weed free, and otherwise lavish TLC, I usually wind up with nothing. But if I just toss 'em in the ground, walk away, and pay no attention, I wind up with bumper crops. Go figure! Anyway, I'm happy to hear about your success. |
