Root crops

I have lousy luck with root crops. Can't even grow radishes worth a darn. But a couple of days ago I harvested a handful of carrots, and today...

Back in the spring, I found some spongy, sprouting potatoes in the back of my fridge. Figuring I was just going to throw them out anyway, I planted them in my 2 biggest pots. These are large flowerpots, not 5-gallon cans or anything like that, so I figured I wouldn't grow any potatoes, but they grew beautiful foliage with purple flowers, so I was happy.

Now the plants have died down, so I figured "What the heck?" and dug them up.

I just harvested 9 potatoes, and some are of a decent size!
