Hard to believe. The Crockpot turned 75 this past Friday. Three quarters of a century. Imagine that!

Me, I was busy cooking real food, so missed the party. Missed it, hell! I wasn’t invited---which should come as no surprise to folks who know how I feel about those contraptions.

Interestingly, the Crockpot was not designed as a labor-saving device. Instead, Irving Nachumsoln, the inventor, wanted a device that would cook Cholent, a Sabath stew favored by Jews from eastern Europe.

Jews are forbidden to actually cook on the Sabbath, because it’s considered to be working. Traditionally, Jewish housewives would prepare the stew ahead of time and bring the pots to the nearby bakery. Residual heat from the ovens would slow-cook the stew.

The Crockpot quickly took over that function, while becoming, at the same time, the darling of the newly liberated female workforce. As with many so-called labor saving devices, it didn’t actually give them more free time. Instead, it freed them to work outside the home.

Oddly enough, Crockpots and other slow cookers, fueled by celebrity chefs, are undergoing a new trendiness. Sales have nearly doubled since the turn of the century. And upscale cookbooks have been written for them.

Hopefully, the newer, high-tech models do a better job that the earlier ones. Me, I wouldn’t know.

But we hae meat and we can eat
And sae the Lord be thanket

Happy Birthday Crockpot!
I have one, I used it once. Now it takes up space, along with the bread machine.
