Just wondering how everyone is doing in their holiday preparations. So far , we have completed the pork pies and have them in the freezer (except the one we had for dinner last night).
We'll be doing our traditional open house on Christmas day, beginning with bloody Marys. I'm cutting the menu back just a bit this year, as we are only expecting a dozen or so guests. Christmas Day Open House Monday, December 25th 2017 08:00-17:00 Beverages: Bloody Mary Cocktails Appetizers: Shrimp Cocktail Cheese Platter Pickle and Olive Tray Marinated mushrooms Deviled eggs Smoked Mixed Nuts
Buffet Items: Baked Ham with Cumberland Sauce Pork Pie with Picalilli Boston Baked Beans Potato Salad Sweet Peas Dinner Rolls
Dessert: Chocolate Cream Pie Assorted Christmas Cookies Assorted chocolates So what is everyone else planning and how far along are you? |

Good Lord, Dave. I'm still digesting Thanksgiving. Haven't given Christmas a thought.
It'll be just the two of us, so I'll probably do something simple---like, maybe, two tickets to Rhode Island. |

But we hae meat and we can eat
And sae the Lord be thanket |

That looks incredible, Dave - I wish I could be there.
For us, just ham, with the traditional trimmings. Chex mix will also be involved, I am sure. |

My mom just had her hip replaced, so my sisters and I are planning to bring more food than usual. Provided anyone's willing to eat my cooking...

Sounds great. In the midst of a 2 month home reno. Everything we own is still in storage in the basement. But to appease upset family members that we can't host xmas this year my wife somehow agreed that we would host a Eggs Benny boxing day brunch for 25 people. Panicked I made 3 whole loins of back bacon yesterday and tomorrow will try to find the kitchen table and bring it up to my truly empty kitchen. I do not know how on earth I am going to put the house back together in time. Maybe schnapps will help

Here's the thing: You hand each of them a plate of eggs and a paintbrush (or whatever)
Fair is fair, after all. |

Picked up 8 dozen eggs and 5 lbs of butter today:) Brook I will pass your paintbrush idea on to my wife. Funny how none of them accepted my repeated pleas for assistance in October and November but to the last, they can all seem to make it over on Boxing Day for Eggs Benedict and Prosecco. I will be drinking my favorite Xmas Libation-Caribou-which by the way goes awesome with Peppernuts

I was Christmas cooking from 2:30-9:30 yesterday, with a half-hour break. I made:
Christmas puffs, filled with red + green bell peppers, cream cheese, onion, and bacon. A spinach-artichoke rice dish that could probably use less sour cream and more rice. (Tastes good, but it's like eating dip.) Creamed onions. (If nothing else, I've learned that I can make a cream gravy/white sauce/bechamel that I really like.) Not bad considering that I used to just bring a box of crackers and some cheese. I'll still bring some cheese. My mom already has crackers. :) |

Started baking yesterday. Orange rolls from a tube (eesh) for breakfast, apple muffins for immediate consumption, focaccia for dinner with a big pot of red beans and rice, started a biga for a loaf for today, and oatmeal/raisin cookies because they stay moist for family dinner tomorrow. Got that loaf going first thing this AM, will do Italian beef in crockpot for dinner tonight, sandwiched around football game we'll bake cookies (snickerdoodles and chocolate crinkles for sure), cranberry nut bread because my FIL has to have it, and finish off the day with prep for Grandma Weber's cranberry/nut/grape salad. Tomorrow morning we'll make jalepeno poppers and then Trace will leave me for her family Christmas. I'll be "Home Alone" since I have a nasty cold that could be threatening to BIL Craig who has severe health issues. That means I can probably do some more baking tomorrow! An aside: I have noticed (Does anyone else concur?) that baking cookies with butter gives a crunchier, crisper product while baking with margarine turns out a moister, longer lasting treat. Merrrrry Christmas!
