We all know cooking in cast iron is a great way to increase dietary iron.  I have given up my cast iron skillets and dutch ovens and now prefer clay. So what about the dietary iron thing?  Well, I've decided to go with the Japanese method of introducing cast iron trinkets to cooking pots.  The two that I know of are the iron lucky fish and the Nambu iron egg.  I went with the egg.

I place it in a pot of simmering stews, soups or what have you.  It does require a small amount of acid to work.  Tomatoes and lemon work just fine.  Ever hear of iron water?  Well, the Japanese make this simple concoction with trinkets like these.

They are so successful in adding iron to the diet, the fish retailer sells them as "Buy one, give one".  Consumers pay double, receive one iron fish, and the other is donated to a family in need.
