i strongly recommend it, especially for meats (especially wild game), eggs, popcorn, potatoes and vegetables - any dish where you might use salt-n-pepper. it has a very unique and rustic flavour that is much more than the sum of its parts.

if you don't want to buy it, cou can probably make your own. here's a formula from RobertMT on BSB. i haven't tried it but he says it is very close: 

3 TB pickling (fine) salt 
2 tsp onion powder 
2 tsp msg (optional) "accent" in groc stores 
2 tsp pepper (I like half white and half black) 
1 tsp garlic powder 
I mix this up and put in shaker, Makes about 1/3 cup, it is real close to Alpine salt in taste.

as you can see, the msg is optional and while i have no problem with it, some might choose to leave that component out.

he also says:

 If you remember the old Alpine flavor, it had about 1/8 tsp of the juniper berries in it, newer versions don't....You may have to fine tune it a bit to your tastes, I put a little more onion powder in mine than alpine, take out about 1/2 tsp from base, will get you real close.

i asked for some clarification on that, and here's what he said:

Use 1 1/2 tsp onion powder instead of 2 tsp onion powder and yes adding the 1/8 tsp ground juniper berries, does make it taste like it did 30 yrs ago.  Other than for wild game, the juniper, sage or allspice can quickly overpower other spices, so add slowing 1/8 tsp at a time.
This base recipe is for only a 1/3 cup batch, once seasoning is to your taste, make a bigger batch, pint works out best for me, which is six times base batch.
Be sure to try the optional flavors listed, I've been adding finely ground dried bell pepper & jalapeno flakes lately and it's a nice touch.
