Received this in email.  This is a great deal on a Henckels 8" chef's knife and cutting board, forged and MADE IN GERMANY.  If you are ready to start your fine cutlery collection this would be a great first knife.  I use Wusthof primarily and have used Henckels in the past and they are great blades, the competition between the two is sort of like Canon versus Nikon.  I paid almost twice this amount 20 years ago when I bought my first Henckels chef's knife.

Couldn't resist so I took advantage of this deal myself while W-S was offering a one-day Memorial Day free shipping promotion, one can't have too many blades.  I am a sucker for good knives, this will make my third 8" forged chef's knife along with my Wusthof and Lamson Silver blades.  I am anxious to see how the Henckels steel compares to the other two.  The Lamson steel is good but the Wusthof is better and in my experience the high-end Henckels are also very, very good, as good as Wusthof, if not even a bit better.  I'll post a review once I have had a chance to use it for a bit.

Do let us know how it performs for you, Andy, particularly its edge-holding ability compared to other Henkels blades.

The Pure line is made exclusvely for W-S, which always makes me suspicious as to quality, especially when they offer it at a bargain price.

In general, and depending on specific lines, I find the Henkels to be the performance equals of Wustoff, but the Henkels blades tend to be heavier. And they tend more towards the French profile than the German.

When we set Friend Wife up with her own knives, we didn't go with Henkels for those reasons. She finds my 8" Twin Cuisine, for instance, to be overly heavy and awkward to use. And she likes more rocker than I do. For her, the 8" Wustoff Classic Ikon is the perfect design.

One thing I think this demonstrates is that once you get started with high-quality knives the techical details become almost meaningless. What really counts is how comfortable the knife is in your hand.

hey, andy - have you given the knife a try, yet? it sounds like a nice piece of cutlery and a great price; although i am afraid it is out of my range.

would love to hear more about it, and perhaps i can score a deal on an online site such as amazon or ebay.

Nah, I took another look at it after Brook's posts and actually ended up cancelling the order as I didn't care for the way the handle was attached.  I like for the handle scales to be riveted to the tang unlike this knife.  I have enough 8" chef's knives anyway.  Thanks for asking, though.
