Alright, this is a REALLY simple. My 10 year old boy cooked it, with me taking the pix, and helping where necessary.
I am posting this in Southern Food because it's a comfort food, easy to make, pretty cheap, and tastes pretty darn good. If anyone has a way to make this recipe better, let me know, this is a really simple recipe, and can be played with quite a bit to enhance the flavor. Any ideas, let me know, the spicing was simple, a little salt and pepper... First, the ingredients. We have Bill, at Windy Ridge Meats, whom I purchase a good amount of meat at, far better quality than anything at any grocery store, if you don't have a butcher, find one. I do NOT recommend store brand Cream of Mushroom soup, but it's all I had in the cupboard, it is simply too salty. Brown the ground beef.....then add the cream of mushroom soup..... Stir it in pretty good, only bring the heat down to medium, you are about to cool everything rapidly with what you are about to add, so don't worry about burning, keep things moving and nothing will burn.... Make sure you don't throw that can away, because it's your measuring cup now. Add one can of rice and one can of water. Mix it up completely, and place the lid on top. In about 20 minutes, you'll have a great meal.... Once it's done, it should look like this, when you take off the lid, give it one good stir to make sure everything is mixed, I let down the temp to just above low about 10 minutes after putting the lid on... And enjoy, as if I need to recap... 1 lb of ground beef 1 can of cream of mushroom soup (family size) 1 can equivalence of rice (quick rice is quicker, but you can use regular white rice, just make sure to increase the cooking time to compensate for how long the rice takes to cook. 1 can equivalence of water And that's it. a quick, cheap, and tasty meal that you can play with at your leisure. sounds good, aaron! we do something similar, except use mashed potatoes and then the burger/soup as a gravy.
one thing that really puts a kick in the flavour is to chop up an onion and fry it along with the burger; a couple of cloves of garlic are nice, too!
i'm finding more and more, anytime we do something on a hamburger base (even something as simple as hamburger helper or something like that), a chopped onion really adds flavour. i am sure there are also some health benefits as well (vitamins, fibre, SOMEthing).
excellent post and congrats to ryan on the meal!

Yum! I love these types of dishes. We also do something similar using noodles instead of rice and I have also made a similar dish using cream of mushroom and cream of celery along with rice. These are some of my favorite dishes. Thanks for posting!!

we made this same basic dish the other night, adding a sauteed onion and frozen vegetables - baked in the oven for a few minutes until the cheese we put on top was golden-brown and bubbly. very good!

That's a great idea, Ron! Sauteed onions and some frozen peas and carrots and cheese would be great in this and Mom's suggestion of water chestnuts also sounds great.
I need to make one of these here in the near future. A dish like this sure stretches the dollar in tough times like those of today and makes it easier to feed a family. Add a leafy green salad and some crusty bread and you're eating like a king. |

I do a very similar dish...
Add 1 can Cream of Chicken Soup along with Cream of Mushroom, Add 1 small container of Sour Cream. Salt and Pepper to taste. Then I boil up some Extra Wide Egg Noodles and serve over the noodles. It's my Beef Stroganoff so to speak.

I made this last night and even used the soup can to measure the rice. The only changes I made were to sprinkle a cup of shredded cheddar over it and bake it at 350 for about 25-30 min in the oven until the rice was done instead of cooking it on top of the stove.
This is damn tasty, reminds me so much of the casseroles my grandmothers used to make when I was kid. I love these kind of meals. This one is easy and really good. |

With cooked onions. Some kids don't like onions though. Maybe sub chopped chicken livers or gizzards for the ground beef if you're of an adventurous nature! Throw some frozen peas or green beans in there. Make the original recipe, but make it with a lot of black pepper. Or serve it with a bunch of those canned fried onions like you find on that green bean casserole everybody knows about. Skip the rice and serve over buttered toast, noodles or mashed potatoes. The biscuit idea does sound good too. And what isn't better with cheese on it? All of that said, I'm not sure it would make this better than the original recipe, but then there's always a way to put bacon in there somehow!

I like it with onions too, Darko - easy, good-tasting and fast, which is often just right for weeknights ~
