How common is this globally?
It has been difficult to find in Canada, yet I have memories of this on store shelves in the 70's. I am also wondering which is the largest single item that is available canned? |

Haven't seen whole canned chicken in years. We can still get canned chiken, but it's in pieces. And, imo, only suitable for things like pulled chicken, chicken a la king, and other items like that.
The largest can used for retail purposes is a #10. You could fit two cooked chickens or two cooked ducks in one of them, if you wanted to. I don't know whether anyone has tried anything bigger. Maybe a small turkey? |

I bought one once, around 1990 or '91, when The Beautiful Mrs. Tas and I were just starting out.
It was a little weird-looking, but tasted fine - and, there was indeed a whole chicken in there!

USDA gave away a bunch of them in it 1950's and 1960's, most went to Mexicans who tossed the unopened cans on trash piles.
Also 5 lb cans of peanut butter and american cheese. Flour, lard and beans were about all the Mexicans would use. |
