Has anyone else been watching the Kingsford BBQ Pitmaster's competition? This is the single highest paying BBQ contest in the world, with a top prize of $100,000.

In case the zeros confuse you, you say that: "One hundred thousand."

On a circuit where two grand for first place is really big time, that's serious money.

At any rate, in one of the preliminaries there was some really horrendous behavior shown by a competitor who'd been eliminated. He starts by flipping the bird to the judges, then throws a tizzy fit, banging on equipment and carrying on. A very poor performance!

Jump ahead to the finals. One of the losers---a relative newcomer to the competitive circuit---really took it to heart. He'd given his all to the contest, and was eliminated based on a side-contest. Poor guy was practically in tears.

Johnny Trigg stopped what he was doing to give the guy a deep hug and a pep talk. Among other things, the Godfather of BBQ reminded him "look how far you've come," and told him, "you've done me proud."

That would have been gracious at any time. But coming on the heels of the tantrum thrown by the other guy, it was especially heartfelt.

I, for one, was very impressed.

I'm not impressed with too many TV personalities in BBQ, but Johnny Trigg has always been and continues to be the one exception; he's always been a class act - perhaps it has something to do with his....maturity!Clap

Gee, Ron. You don't think Myron Mixon is a sweetheart? :>)

Seriously, I know what you mean. I don't think it's just Trigg's age, though. I believe it's a hallmark of his personality. I can't imagine him ever being anything but gracious. But he really shined this time.

The thing is, these bigger contests are all invitationals. And I don't reckon the clown who threw the fit is going to see too many more invites. Totally reprehensible and unprofessional behavior.

Something else that impresses me, watching the series (not just the Kingsford contest) is the number of non-southerners who are producing really good barbecue. Just demonstrates how universal it's become.
