According to www.nibble.com the recipe for Brownies derived from a well known Chef´s recipe, Fannie Farmer in 1905. Of course, each household prepared their own take on Fannie´s.

Here is my Mom Eva´s failproof recipe ...

3 cups sugar
3/4 cups shortening
1 cup butter
1/3 cup corn syrup
2 1/2 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate melted
Egg Yield: 18 brownies ( 3 or 4 small eggs )
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1 1/4 cup walnuts or pecans or almonds or hazelnuts or Pistachios or a mixture
2 cups cake flour

1) cream the sugar, shortening and butter until light and fluffy.
2) add the corn syrup
3) combine and scrape down the sides of the bowl
4) add melted chocolate and combine thoroughly
5) scrape down sides of bowl again and gradually add the eggs, mixing well
6) stir the remaining ingredients together and stir into the batter and combine only until the ingredients are incorporated
7) pour the batter into a greased 9 x 13 inch pan and bake for 20 - 25 mions. at 350 degrees farenheit.

ENJOY,
Margi.
