Here in the US we've come to that time of the year when tomatoes are cheap and plentiful. A tomato salad with a bit of Hungarian dressing is a side dish and a palate cleanser.
Ingredients;
1/2 cup of white vinegar
1/2 cup of cold water
1 Tablespoon of sugar
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 small onion
Tomatoes
![]() I begin by cutting the tomatoes into bite sized pieces.
I cut the onion in half and then slice the halves as thin as I can.
Into the bowl it all goes!
![]() The remainder of the ingredients get mixed well.
![]() Pour the dressing over the tomatoes and onions and put the bowl in the fridge to cool.
![]() Well, it just doesnt get any simpler than that!
The dressing takes just a little getting used to. The first bite will seem far too sour due to the vinegar, but as you chew it up you'll begin to notice the flavors of the other ingredients and be willing to try a second bite. Make through that one and you'll be hooked.
Because of the astringent qualities of the vinegar you'll find this to be a terrific palate cleanser.
If you'd care to twist this recipe just a bit try sprinkling on a little freshly ground black pepper, or add some sliced green bell pepper for added flavor and color.
Incidently, this is the same dressing we use on our Cucumber Salad.
Enjoy
By the way, I keep this salad in a covered plastic bowl in the fridge and add more tomatoes as the supply dwindles. This can be done three or four times before the dressing becomes too diluted and has to be replaced.

simple and excellent! i am willing to bet that those flavours really bring out the best in the tomatoes!
ours got a late start this year - hopefully they will be ready in time to try this ~ i would hate to use store-bought ones!
