Happy St. Paddy´s ... What are your plans for the 17th: bouncing the pubs for a pub crawl and /or dining at home ? what is on the stove ?

Since it is a Saturday this year, we shall have an Irish style lunch, cornbeef ... and I am thinking about a mini tiny green dessert ...  however, we do plan to hit the Irish pub, me in an emerald silk shirt, and the Vet in a dark  emerald green crewnk sweater on the next corner for a round with an Irish friend and her Spanish husband.

Look forward to hearing some of your specialties and fun planned.

Kindest. Have a nice Sunday.
Margi.

We will be having some friends over for http://foodsoftheworld.activeboards.net/corned-beef-in-boston-lager_topic1198.html - corned beef slow cooked in Boston Lager , braised cabbage, onions and carrots on the side.

Of course there will be Guinness all around, and desert will probably be a zeppole in honor of St Joseph's day which is right after St Paddy's day.

I hope everybody gets into the spirit of the day and enjoys themselves.

Go ahead...play with your food!

I'm a bit concerned about it falling on a Saturday. Means there will be a slew of amateur drunks running around, pretending to be professional Irishmen.

Glad I don't have to go downtown for anything!

margi and dave, your plans sound wonderful! i wish i was there to join in, but i will have to take my chances here in montana which, thanks to the rich irish heritage in the town of butte, has quite a good time every march 17th. anyone interested in reading a little about the irish heritage in montana can read here:

http://foodsoftheworld.activeboards.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=1247&title=the-butte-pasty - http://foodsoftheworld.activeboards.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=1247&title=the-butte-pasty

as for my own plans, i'd like to make the irish stew that i posted here:

http://foodsoftheworld.activeboards.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=1816&title=irish-stew - http://foodsoftheworld.activeboards.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=1816&title=irish-stew

using the variations that i mentioned. if i do, i'll post a tutorial. we did a great rendtition of corned beef and cabbage two years ago - recipe and pictures here:

and last year, i made what i considered to be the best irish soda bread ever - recipe and pictures here:

http://foodsoftheworld.activeboards.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=333&title=irish-soda-bread - http://foodsoftheworld.activeboards.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=333&title=irish-soda-bread

if i am able to make the stew, as planned, i will also make the soda bread for sopping up all that wonderful stuff!

brook - i hear what you're saying about all the amateurs. they do cause a little bit of trouble, don't they? i was one of them once, but some digging into our family history revealed a good little percentage of irish blood, so i'm an amateur no more...lol ~

Ron,

Thanks for posting the websites about St. Paddy´s.

@ Hoser:  sounds great ... St. Joseph´s the 19th in Spain, is a legal bank holiday plus LAS FALLAS, THE FIRES, in Valencia ... a huge week long celebration of craftsmen who have made these stunner statues, both humorous, global in message, political, and social --- and then they burn them on ST. JOSEPH´s which is also FATHER´s DAY in Spain ... Lots of firecrackers and fireworks and Noise and the town street paellas !!! There is a paella competition ... the best part !

There is a Museum in Valencia, called the EL MUSEO DE LAS FALLAS where the children´s statues are chosen and saved year to year for all to see.

Happy,
Margi.

Historic Foodie,

Have a green frosted cake and a few beers ... The Irish Pub near my loft is 200 metres ... no cars ... no drunks in vehicles ... that is a serious crime here in Spain, the slammer for sure, and the fines ... and the video cameras here !

well, as it turned out, i didn't make the irish stew yet. i was going to simply make it with beef, but finally decided to hold out for some lamb, in order to really get the experience.

instead, we made my time-tested guinness corned beef and cabbage, using this recipe and method:

http://foodsoftheworld.activeboards.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=341&title=st-patricks-day-corned-beef-and-cabbage - http://foodsoftheworld.activeboards.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=341&title=st-patricks-day-corned-beef-and-cabbage

something different that i did was to add red potatoes and carrots to the slow-cooker for the duration of the cooking. about an hour or so before we expected to eat, i also added cabbage, which i had quartered and then chopped.

results were outstanding! this recipe is defintiely "tried and true," and will be a winner for anyone wanting a delicious st. patrick's day meal....or a great meal anytime, for that matter.

i also made soda bread, but for some reason it didn't turn out quite as well as it did here:

http://foodsoftheworld.activeboards.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=333&title=irish-soda-bread - http://foodsoftheworld.activeboards.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=333&title=irish-soda-bread

it tasted good, but it was a little flat and dense. i was a little careless in my measuring, and i also probably kneaded it a little too long, because i was having trouble bringign it together. these factors probably contributed.
