I am no expert, but my understanding is that the story of wine in South Africa is really an inspirational tale of triumph over adversity. As I recall, just getting the vine cuttings to South Africa was an incredible challenge, let alone getting them established and producing the wonderful, world-class wine that comes from there today.

If our resident experts on South Africa would be willing to elaborate, I know many of us would love to learn!

Tas, African Meat, and Add to Taste,

In going over some old magazines from the Wine Advocate, I have come across a listing of each South African Designation of Origin of Control, AND WINERIES ( labels ) ... and recommendations of the 2011 harvestĀ“s best wines ( harvest is in autumn ) ...

I am a Stellenbosch Red Woman ... Nice ... Some recs.  in the article are:

1. kaapzicht :  stellenbosch merlot wooded

2.  kaapzicht: shiraz grape 100% stellenbosch wooded

3.  de trafford: cabernet sauvignon stellenbosch

4. clos malverne : white sauvignon blanc stellenbosch

5. DELAIRE : chardonnay white stellenbosch

I shall do my best to write this up on FRIDAY ...

Have a lovely week,
Margi.

It was a lot to type up so I photographed it. If it's unclear, I will type it up for you :)

Thanks for the information, Hila! It looks like a good run-down of the history of wine in South Africa, and an excellent place to start.

Hope all is well -

Ron

Add to Taste,
Thanks so much for your post listing the historical dates for the uncountable wine Appellations.

Appreciate it.

Have great summer,
Margaux
