Primitivo is what the Apulians, or the Italians from the boot heel portion of Italy call their ur-grape. Until recently, an unknown type from unknown provenance, the grape makes the ubiquitous deep dark rich wine from that part of Italy. Its name means “primitive” and the grape was known to be rustic and original.

 

It is only recently, thanks to genetic typing, that the primitivo grape has been found to be a type of zinfandel that was probably brought over from Croatia back in the duskiness of history.

 

From the ancient times of Greek and Phoenician trading, the primitivo vines were brought over and planted in the hot, sunny parts of lower Italy where it flourished. The rich, red wine that it makes is a hallmark of the region. It can be deep, intense and beautiful from one maker and a harsh, tinny wine from another. Find a primitivo you like and know what it was the ancients enjoyed.
