So, comes the latest mailer from Bed Bath & Beyond, and they're touting an air fryer.
Anyone have an idea what that might be. Frying, by definition, entails the use of oil. But the hype with this appliance cheers the healthiness of frying without oil.
Huh?
Anybody got a clue?

Thanks for that info, Mike.
I wasn't venting about the technology as much as with the concept. It's all part of the dumbing down of culinary terms, especially (but not confined to) by the "healthy" food folks.
Pretty soon we won't be communicating at all, cuz terms won't have any meaning.
I did some research, and, essentially, the machine uses high heat and convection currents to encourage the Malliard reaction. That is, the food browns.
But browning and searing, of themselves, are not frying. If that were the case you'd be frying those grill marks onto a steak. Frying, by definition, entails the use of oil and high heat. This not only browns the food, it adds flavor to it.
These are the same folks who tell you to "sauté in a little water...."
Say what?

These so called "Air fryer" have a commonality. They all require a small amount of oil. It is just buried in the fine print:)

Oh, I understand completely. But it's all about the money. Currently deep fried anything, from turkey to snickers bars, is all the rage so they're trying to capitalize on that by suggesting that you can "air fry" food and still have it be healthy. Of course, as you point out it's a load of crap, and a complete dumbing down of the terms, but hey, isn't that where everything is going these days? We have to dumb everything down to the least common denominator so that "everyone gets it" instead of educating people properly. It's easier just to change the way we perceive things so that even the people who don't know any better, now know everything than to do it correctly. And all to make a couple extra bucks.

I saw that in my research, Murray. Including the fact that ads had to be pulled and reworded, in England, because they were intentionally misleading in that regard.
Still and all, given the amount of oil used, I wouldn't call it frying.

Still and all, given the amount of oil used, I wouldn't call it frying. | I was at a demo once where they claimed they did not need to add oil, but I noticed that they were using oil blanched frozen French Fries. They were not amused when I announced that fact to everyone in attendance:)

Yep...it's all about the almighty buck, like always. Simply a marketing ploy the hook the unfortunate less-informed so they can scam them out of a considerable amount of cash.
No good dirty corksoakers!
