In further late breaking news, the Nobel prize committee has just announced the end of civilization as we know it by awarding the Nobel prize for literature---literature, mind you---to Bob Dylan. I have to say I'm somewhat amused at your reaction to the award Brook. Were you also upset that T.S,Eliot, Kipling and Yeats won the Nobel? Or would you have been if Carl Sandburg or Robert Frost had won? Dylan, after all is nothing more than a poet, with his rhymes set to what some people call music. Oh well...different strokes for different folks I guess.

True, Dave. But do you really think his poems are the best of the breed, and compare to the works of those others? I've discussed this with a number of people who, like thee and me, grew up during the Dylan years. Not one of them can recite the lyrics to even one of his songs. Yet, here's a test for you. Don't think about it, just answer this question from the same era: where have all the flowers gone? See the difference? Touché ! remembered that one easily, and would not be offended if Pete Seeger won it either. Now don't get me wrong...I certainly don't think "Subterranean Homesick Blues" is any great work of art, but I do believe that "Blowing in the Wind" is. I can remember the lyrics to that as well, and believe it will last til long after we are gone.

That's where we differ, Dave. I don't believe anyone, 50 years from now, will even know Dylan's name, let alone recognize any of his songs. FWIW, I'm with you re: Pete, whose body of work, starting with the Almanac Singers and lasting until the day he passed, is unparalleled. ------------- But we hae meat and we can eat And sae the Lord be thanket |
