A friend and I have been corresponding privately about this quintessential South African dish, which has roots spreading out all the way from Holland to Malaysia. He found this recipe on an Italian site, which looks to be fairly typical, easy and - above all - delicious.

I'm posting the recipe (as trandlated), so that I can eventually give it a try.

Ingredients for 4 people

1 tbsp of sunflower oil plus another one to brush the 4 individual oven dishes
1 large slice of white bread, no crust
300 ml of milk
450 g of minced beef
25 g of butter
1 apple, peel and core removed, chopped in small pieces
1 finely chopped onion
1/2 tbsp of curry powder
1 tbsp of mango chutney
1 tbsp of sliced almonds
1/2 tbsp of sultanas (raisins)
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 eggs
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Chopped fresh cilantro for decoration
Steamed rice as a side dish

Preparation

Pre-heat the oven at 180°C. Grease the 4 oven dishes with sunflower oil. Pour the milk in a bowl en let the bread soak in it for at least 10 minutes.

In a pan with sunflower oil, fry the minced beef until golden brown. Break any meat lumps with a wooden spoon.

Melt the butter in another pan and add the apple and onion. Fry gently for 5 minutes until the apple is soft and the onion translucent. Add the curry powder and fry for another minute. Add the mango chutney, almond slices, raisins and lemon juice.

Squeeze the bread but do save the milk. Add the bread to the meat. Also add the apple/onion mixture and season well with salt and pepper. Transfer this mixture to the 4 individual oven dishes and put in the oven for 15 minutes or longer, until there’s a light crust forming.

Meanwhile, take the milk in which the bread has soaked and add the eggs and salt and pepper. Whisk well.

Take the meat from the oven and pour the milk/egg mixture in the oven dishes. Put the meat back in the oven for another 15-20 minutes or until a golden crust appears. Garnish with fresh cilantro.

Serve with steamed rice in a separate bowl.

This sounds quite fascinating ..  

Considering the sweet and savory profile, I think this could be lovely with boneless chicken breasts ..

I like the Golden raisin ( sultanas ) or the raisins ( black ) with the lemon juice and mango idea ..  

Also, instead of a jar of chutney,  a home made chutney would be a marvel or even fresh mango perhaps ..  

Basmati rice would surely be lovely here ..
