I am guessing that there are dozens of examples, but here are few from Culinaria: The United States (1998):

Quote Countless stories and legends lie behind the invention of great dishes, and New York restaurants had plenty. The tales are often apocryphal, but always colorful, adding a measure of interest to the enjoyment of some of our favorite restaurant treats.

At the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Chef Louis Diat created Vichyssoise, the chilled potato-and-leek soup. It sounds French, but it is as American as Chop Suey and Apple Pie.

Other dishes are less easily attributed to one person or place, like the Reuben sandwich. A grilled sandwich made with corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing on rye bread, it may have been invented by a man named Reuben or at a New York deli named Reuben's. It hardly matters; the sandwich is a much-loved deli classic with an enthusiastic following. The same is true of New York cheesecake; there are many different cheesecakes from all over the world, but New York cheesecake is distinguished by a smooth cream cheese filling baked in a graham cracker crust. It is either a heavy, creamy, deliciously satisfying dessert, or a lighter, drier, less tangy entity, depending on who you ask. New Yorkers are always arguing about it. Lindy's restaurant popularized this cake in the 1940s, and it became an American menu standard, especially in New York's best steak houses.

The  Waldorf salad dates back to 1893 when a Swiss immigrant had bought the building and created the Hotel  Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan ..

Changes took place in the récipe in the 1950s ..
