As usual, The Beautiful and Thoughtful Mrs. Tas knew exactly the right thing to get me for my birthday (tomorrow): a complete 5-gallon beer home-brewing kit from BSG HandCraft (including a 5-gallon glass carboy) and a very good-looking mix for a 1-gallon (10-bottle) grapefruit honey ale from Brooklyn Brew Shop. I'm looking forward to trying this, the first of many productions - in fact, I couldn't wait, so I opened it a day early!

Congrats, and happy birthday!
You're absolutely going to love brewing your own beer. We've got a small group of us that have been doing it for a little while now... we are brewing some very good beers! It's a blast... and you end up with an extremely tasty fresh brewed beer. Have fun! Dan |

UPDATE" For my actual birthday, my dad also gave me a mix called "American Pale Ale," which comes from E.C. Kraus. That one is a 5-gallon batch (appx 53 bottles), and should make an excellent second project.
Eventually, I hope to try some German wheat beers, Belgian beers, Czech pilsners, and so on. Maybe even something on the smoky-dark side ~ |

Some clones recipes, on the same beer, will be better than other recipes. BUT, as long as you use good clean methods and use quality ingredients (in the correct quantities) you will love the end product...even if it isn't a close clone to what you were trying for. Think about making stock...if you use too much water you're bound to wind up with a flavorless stock. Now add into the fact that we've got access to many of the same specialty grains (etc) and exotic hops on top of the regular stuff we can buy. Home brewing today is a different ballgame than it was 25 years ago...you're going to love it! Dan

My buddy, a few other friends and I, started brewing a few months ago...with really nice results. I Love the fresh grains and the fresh hop complexity you get from home brewing. But before this, my friend Danny has always taken the lead and determined the brew on all the beers so far (he's got the investment and it's his equipment). It's been great so far...but I wanted to give it a try for myself.
This, here, is my first solo beer. My ingredients, my vision...his equipment. He also helped with guidance along the way...but pretty much let me be. While I normally like a nicely hopped grainy beer...I really wanted to learn something about the hops in my first beer. I was going for a medium bodied ale with a nice hop assortment..but not too much grain complexity or depth.. Something that would provide a little body...and be able to let the hop profile build within that. Grains were Superior Pale ale malt, Muinich and Cara-pils. Hopped with Columbus (60), Amarillo (10), El Dorado and Rakau (5). 1056 WYeast and it will be dry hopped with Amarillo and El Dorado. enjoy the beer! dry hopping in the secondary fermenter |
