Quote In 1891 James Mitchell devised a new machine to pipe out a hollow cookie dough and simultaneously fill it with fig jam.

The company, which went on to become Nabisco Brands, produced the cookie in Cambridgeport, Massachusetts, and named it after the nearby town of Newton.

The Fig Newton's continued popularity is such that much of the American fig crop goes into making over a billion of them a year.
