Topic: Forum upgrades - please readPosted: 31 May 2012 at 16:26 |

hi, everyone -
as you've probably noticed, we've upgraded the forum to the lastest software version from WebWiz, the london-based firm that hosts the forum. this came about as a result of WebWiz's no longer being able to provide free hosting. luckily, the paid hosting service is very affordable, and so we've switched over to that. some of the benefits of doing this are that
more details can be found here: in the meantime, here's a list of some of the features of the new software:
if anyone has questions about this, let me know. along with this, we've set up a non-intrusive ad service in order to help the forum pay for itself as much as possible, so that we don't have to rely as much on donations or out-of-pocket funding. this service comes through sites like viglink, google adsense and others, and looks to me like a pretty good option. if you see these links, which imbed themselves in posts for common, everyday sites such as ebay, amazon and scores of others, please do click on them and check out what they have to offer! the software also allows for two fairly-discreet banners, which we've always had with WebWiz anyway. these banners, if used, will also be non-intrusive and will be relevant (no porn, pharmaceutical etc. ads!). basically, where ads are concerned, everything is pretty much the way it was before, except it is working for us now, rather than working for someone else, and helping the site to pay for itself.
also, i am setting up a paypal account for donations, and will post more details on that here as well as in a sticky at the top of this forum. donations are entirely free-will and will be used for site-related purposes only, including server/hosting fees, upgrades, if necesary, features, promotion for the site and things like that. we are not a business or a for-profit site, so no one is obligated to donate, but it will certainly be appreciated and you can rest assured it will be used for the betterment of the forum.
i think that covers everything, but if anyone has ANY issues, questions or problems relating to the upgrade, please reply here and let me know, and we'll see if we can get them straightned out. ths forum is for you, our valued members, and we want to make it a great place for you to gather.
thank you!
Ron

I've noticed one thing that I like. Before, if there were lots of new messages and I only had time to read a few, everything would get marked read. Now when I come back the ones I haven't read yet are still highlighted.
