I'm just curious as to what make and model can opener everyone uses. My old Zyliss finally went belly-up and I'm  looking for an easy to use suitable replacement. I don't really care if it is the "safe edges" type or just a plain old take the lid off opener.

Not interested in any electric one, they are all a waste of money IMHO.

Thanks in advance for any tips you can send my way.

Hi Dave,

I use this one. Not an expensive one, but I've been very happy with it for a while now:

Agree with you on the electric ones, Dave, never owned one myself nor want one. The best can opener I have ever had, and still keep in the cutlery drawer is the trusty Army P-38. After that, just a plain old metal one with a butterfly shaped hand crank. I guess it would be called a "swing-away". Be careful when you buy them, you want the cutting edge which makes up the "swing away" action to be carbon steel (black). This is the 3d piece of metal that the two handles are riveted to. The all chrome ones break easily (the rivets don't grip the nickeled metal right) and don't last long. I think I only paid about $5 for this one and they last a long time. I've had much more expensive, fancier brands like Ecko and Rubbermaid and they stank. The toothed gear always wore out and they'd stop working.

Here are some can opener reviews you may be interested in reading Dave. I noticed the Pampered Chef can opener has some good reviews..while we can't always reply on these reviews, I CAN say that I have liked everything I've ever purchased from Pampered Chef (I do not sell it, have never sold it, nor do I know anyone who sells it btw...wanted to clarify! LOL):

I'm a big fan of pampered chef myself Deb..I have one of their mincing gadgets that I use all the time.

After reading a lot of reviews, I'm leaning toward the Oxo that opens them without the sharp edges.

Thanks again to all for the input.

I have had a P-38 on my keyring since the 70s.  Makes a good emergency screw driver too.  In the kitchen I have a simple hand held rotary can opener.

We have had this Kuhn Rikon original for about 15 years..... It is amazing....  Leaves the edge smooth... the blade does not get dirty... never been cleaned.....  You have heard the old addage, "better thatn sliced .... "   This is it.....  Don't remember where we got it...  I remember at the time is was pricey..... Worth every dollar...   If this one ever fails, I will buy another....   Dave
