I hesitated opening up this topic, as it is completely not-food-related, but then again, I figured - why not? We're a little community here, and in any community, people are interested in getting to know their friends and neighbours.

My tastes in music are very wide and very varied ~ "eclectic" is the word that could be used, and it is safe to say that music has been a fundamental part of my life almost since I was born.

I was raised on country music, but it would be incorrect to call it "country and western" or anything like that. This was "old country," going back to the beginnings and what made country music, country music. It touches a little on bluegrass, blues, western, rockabilly, even jazz and swing - and there is a hefty and healthy element of its own that is entirely unique - a throwback to a time that is ever-more-rapidly disappearing from our collective consciousness and national identity, when a young man rode as a night-hawk in a circle around five thousand head of cattle, singling softly and soothingly in order to keep them calm so that they wouldn't stampede at the slightest noise. It is my mother-tongue, where music is concerned. Hank Williams (the original), Marty Robbins, Jimmie Rodgers, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash (his OLD stuff), Waylon Jennngs (in his prime), George Jones's original work - these are all as hard-wired into me as my green-blue eyes and dishwater-blonde hair.

As I got older, I joined my school's band (trumpet) and learned to play in a concert, jazz and blues and "pep-band" style, with occasional performances at church for Easter and Christmas. I taught myself how to play guitar, memorised all the onld country songs that I loved, and learned some new ones.

As I matured in my exploration of music, I was exposed to other genres, ranging from Metallica's heavy metal, to Madonna's light, top-40 pop, to Mozart's inspirational and immortal classical - and almost everything in-between. Hendrix, Wagner, Falco, Def Leppard, The Beastie Boys - too many to ever list. 50s, 60s, 80s, opera, rap, grunge, sacred, secular - it's all good, as far as I am concerned. I gained an appreciation for and love of just about any music, of nearly any genre, from any age, that I came into contact with - with very few exceptions. As an historian, the different types of music over the decades and even the centuries have all been welcome to me as a reflection of the people of a place and time, and an expression of the passions held by those people. Of all the songs and genres that I heard, many were eventually absorbed into who I am now.

I'm not sure about you, but I have dozens - hundreds, probably - of "always favourites," that have slowly accumulated over the years; and then I have a much, much smaller group of my "today favourites" that reflect my mood or interest at any given time. Naturally, there is a high turnover of "today favourites," and some of of them - the really special ones - eventually end up on my "always favourites" list as they stand the test of time. I suspect that most, if not all, of us, have their music similarly categorised.

Of my "today favourites," this one is probably sitting at the top of the list:

It might seem a little dark, but so what? There's plenty of time for bouncy-flouncy next week, or next month. For now, this one calls to me ~

What's calling to you, these days?

You get no sympathy from me, Dave.

Every since you posted those Lighthouse gummies, Tom Lehrer's song, Smut, has been going around and around.

Your fault, buddy.

Considering the way that songs tend to come in and go out of our heads - sometimes for extended visits - I decided to change the title of this thread to reflect this transitory flight of fancy and whim.

Here's my "ear-worm" for today:

This is the kind of music I grew up on; it really settles well in my bones and in my soul ~

My music faves are THE BLUES, RHYTHYM AND BLUES, SOUL - MOTOWN AND DISCO 1970s - 1980s and on occasion BROADWAY SCORES AND OF COURSE I AM A GRAND FAN OF IL DIVO. I am not a classical music person. I prefer THE BLUES, AND JAZZ IF WE ARE GOING INSTRUMENTAL OR PIANO, Argentinian RAUL DI BLASIO BEING A FAVORITE.

However, at this time of the year, I guess Bing and Andy shall do too ! Though I often play MOTOWN CHRISTMAS AND IL DIVO.

I am a spare wheel here, on C&W, "Cattle Call" is about it, all the rest are classical, I have over 150 CDs, all classical.
I have a game , I try to identify all the classical pieces that are used as background in commercials.
The only thing I can play is the radio and CD player.

If I were in a situation where I could listen to only one piece of music the rest of my life, it just might be this one.

Thankfully, I don't have to make that choice, but if I did....
